STRANGE BEDFELLOWS: MICROSOFT COULD BRING ANDROID APPS TO WINDOWSOf Microsoft’s many challenges in mobile, none loom larger than the app deficit: it only takes a popular new title like Flappy Bird to highlight what the company is missing out on. Windows 8 apps are also few and far between, and Microsoft is stuck in a position where it’s struggling to generate developer interest in its latest style of apps across phones and tablets. Some argue Microsoft should dump Windows Phone and create its own "forked" version of Android — not unlike what Amazon has done with its Kindle Fire tablets — while others claim that’s an unreasonably difficult task. With a new, mobile- and cloud-focused CEO in place, Nokia's decision to build an Android phone, and rumors of Android apps coming to Windows, could we finally see Microsoft experimenting with Google’s forbidden fruit?
Nokia’s not exactly hiding its ambitions with the Lumia Icon, the new $199 5-inch phone it’s launching on February 20th with Verizon. "We want people to really remember this product," Ifi Majid, Nokia’s president of North American marketing, told me. It has no codename, no number: it’s just Icon. The 5-inch device is meant to make clear that Nokia builds phones better than anyone on the market, and that the Windows Phone software it runs isn’t nearly the detriment it once was. This is Nokia’s flagship phone on America’s largest carrier, with a great camera and specs as impressive as the Windows Phone ecosystem has ever seen.
New built-in camera UI, settings tweaks, on-screen buttons, and moreMicrosoft has started sharing its Windows Phone 8.1 Software Development Kit (SDK)with developers, and the inevitable leaks have begun. Over on Reddit, one developer has been documenting all of the updates discovered so far. The first major change appears to be the initial signs of a Windows Phone and Windows RT merger. While iOS and Android both allow developers to build apps across phones and tablets, Microsoft doesn't yet, but it has been hinting that it would follow a similar path. Windows Phones 8.1 includes support for "Universal Apps" that let developers build Windows Store and Windows Phone Store apps from the same shared HTML and JavaScript code. Effectively, this means Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 can run near-identical applications.
February 2014 Patch Tuesday is set to take place later today and we are expecting to see seven security updates for various Microsoft products. Four of these seven updates are rated Critical, Microsoft's highest security level. Three of the updates are rated Important.
A few hours ago we learned that OneDrive might include the “co-owner” feature. Now, the same website has revealed some more information regarding Microsoft’s new cloud storage service. Attesting screenshots to make its claims seem legit, the website says OneDrive will have a Dropbox-like free storage for friends referral.
Before getting itself rebranded, SkyDrive was rumored to get the “co-owner” feature, an option that will allow you to share the ownership of a folder (and all the files inside it) with your colleagues and friends. According to a leak by LiveSide, this feature will be part of OneDrive.
Just days after the first public leak of Windows 8.1 Update 1, we've received a second, more complete leak, which appears to be final or near-final code. Not surprisingly, this newer version includes a few
more changes, plus some refinements to previously revealed features. Microsoft is currently preparing a PC-focused "Update 1" to Windows 8.1. While an early version of the update leaked online earlier this week, the software maker is now believed to be preparing a final release in April. Initial reports suggested Microsoft would aim to deliver Windows 8.1 Update 1 in March, but ZDNet now claims this has shifted a month to April 8th. That date aligns with Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday round of fixes, and it’s rumored that the company will distribute the update through Windows Update rather than the Windows Store. It also aligns with Microsoft's Build conference, which will be held between April 2nd and 4th. Microsoft is expected to announce and detail the update at Build, before releasing it days later.
